le: My Name in English Hi, my name is Emily. That's the English version of my name, but my given name is actually 雅婷 (yǎ tīng) in Mandarin. I always thought it was cool that my name has two different versions, one in Chinese and one in English. It makes me feel like I have two identities in a way. I remember when I first started learning English, my teacher asked me what my name was. I said 雅婷 and she just stared at me blankly. It was then that I realized that not everyone spoke Chinese, and I had to figure out a way to introduce myself in English. That's how I came up with Emily, which is a variation of my middle name. I think it's important to embrace both parts of our identity, whether it's our cultural background or our name. It's a part of who we are, and it makes us unique. Sometimes people struggle with pronouncing my Chinese name, but it's okay. I'm always happy to teach them how to say it properly. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what name we go by, as long as it feels true to ourselves. I'm grateful to have multiple versions of my name because it reminds me of my Chinese roots while also allowing me to connect with people from different backgrounds.
