Despite his struggles with mental illness and poverty, van Gogh created some of the most beautiful works of art during his short career. Behind many of his masterpieces was a muse and a woman he loved deeply. In 1874, while studying art in Brussels, van Gogh fell in love with Eugenie Loyer, the daughter of his landlady. Unfortunately, his feelings were not reciprocated, and Loyer rejected his advances. This rejection led to one of the many emotional breakdowns that van Gogh experienced during his lifetime. However, he would soon meet another woman who would become both his lover and muse. In 1881, Vincent van Gogh moved to The Hague, where he met Sien Hoornik. Sien was a pregnant prostitute and single mother of a young daughter. Despite her social status, Vincent saw beauty in her and began a romantic relationship with her.
